PGDM - All you need to know about a XAT exam
The test is usually held on the first Sunday in January. XLRI Jamshedpur will formally announce the XAT exam date in the final week of July. The first week of August will be the start of registration for the XAT exam 2023.
Essay Writing was reinstated in the most recent test session. It was included in Part 2 of the publication as a section. The score for Essay Writing was not taken into account while calculating the score/percentile. It was examined during the shortlisting process for the Personal Interview (PI) phase.
XAT is an admissions test for MBA/PGDM programs at XLRI and other major MBA institutions in India, including XIMB, IMT Ghaziabad, TAPMI Manipal, and 160 more. XLRI will only accept this exam score for admission to its Jamshedpur and Delhi campuses, and will not accept any other test result. In India, the XAT 2022 test will be held in more than 70 cities and over 100 locations.
The Xavier Aptitude Test, or XAT, is one of the major MBA entrance exams in India, with admissions to XLRI, SPJIMR, IMT, XIMB, TAPMI, and 160+ XAT colleges. Every year, over a million individuals from a variety of fields, including engineering, commerce, humanities, science, and law, apply and sit for this test to be considered for admission to some of the best institutes. The Xavier Aptitude Test has grown simpler over time, however, achieving a high percentile (90+) on this exam needs 4-5 months of dedicated preparation.
Eligibility
To be eligible to take the exam, you must meet the following XAT college eligibility requirements:
- Candidates must have completed a three-year bachelor's degree or equivalent in any field from a recognized university.
- Students who are in their final year of a bachelor's degree program or who are awaiting results are also eligible to apply.
- The XAT test has no minimum score requirement.
How to apply
The registration process is done online in six easy steps at the official website. The registration period is from August to November and there is no late fee. When applying for the exam, you must complete the steps outlined below:
- Register for the XAT 2022 Exam on the official website.
- When you receive a communication from the test center, double-check your email address.
- Complete all pages of the Application Form online.
- Documents must be uploaded online
- Pay the Rs.1800 application fee online and submit the application form.
Syllabus
The Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension component of the Xavier Aptitude Test Syllabus 2022 is broken into four sections: Decision Making, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness. All three questions, except General Awareness, are core portions that determine the percentile score and XLRI shortlisting criterion. When it comes to the personal interview round, the score from the General Awareness component is taken into consideration.
Before you begin your preparation, make sure you have a firm grasp of the most recent curriculum and test structure. As a result, crucial changes in the curriculum, as well as important themes, are some of the most important things you should be aware of before studying for the test.
How to register?
XAT uses an online registration system, which implies that the whole application procedure must be done online. You'll need a scanned copy of your passport-size photo, signatures, and academic papers, as well as personal, academic, and job experience-related information, to complete the online registration procedure.
To register for the XAT, go to XLRI's official website, www.xatonline.in, and select the 'Register' option. To finish the registration procedure, follow the steps outlined on the page. You must only give factual information, since providing false or inaccurate information may result in your exclusion from the admissions process.
When is the XAT exam conducted?
The XAT exam date is in the first week of January. It is held in a single session on a single day. On the official website, a complete notification is issued around August-September (xatonline.in). The message will tell you of relevant XAT exam dates, application costs, MBA/PGP programs, and other pertinent information. The same application form is used to register for both XAT and XLRI. Depending on the XLRI program you choose, you may be required to pay an extra fee.
The test is held in around 80 places across India, however, the exact number of cities varies from year to year. XLRI releases the official XAT answer key and OMR sheet in the last week of January. In the first week of February, the results are announced online. Following the release of the result and cut-off, the XAT selection procedure for all participating XAT colleges commences. The physical copy of the XAT scorecard is sent to the candidates' registered address by XLRI. Candidates should keep their scorecards until the admissions process is completed. Students are invited to a Personal Interview and Group Discussion session after passing the entrance exam.
XAT Exam pattern
Previously, the XAT Paper Pattern had an essay writing question, however, it was deleted from the XAT Exam Pattern when the XAT Paper launched online in 2018. All of the questions in the XAT Exam Pattern 2020 were multiple-choice questions with five possibilities, as opposed to the four options in the CAT. The XAT Exam Pattern 2020, includes a new form of question called the Numerical Aptitude Type (NAT), in which applicants must enter their answers using a virtual keyboard on the screen. This sort of question appeared in the XAT Exam 2021.
The marking method is another distinguishing feature of the XAT Exam Pattern. If you answer all of the questions properly, you'll get 1 point, but if you don't, you'll lose 0.25 points. While this is pretty normal, there is a complexity in that the applicant cannot leave more than 8 questions unanswered. A penalty of 0.05 marks is applied to any questions (over 8) that are not tried. Because the General Knowledge Section has no negative marking, applicants are more likely to attempt the complete section.
Because of the limitation on the number of questions that may be left unattempted, this unique component of the XAT Exam Pattern makes the XAT Exam particularly challenging. As a result, applicants' understanding of the XAT Exam Strategy is critical. This can only be generated after the applicant has attempted multiple mocks.
The final XAT Exam Pattern has been issued, as well as the XAT Notification. After three years, the XAT 2022 Exam Pattern has been updated to include an essay writing question and the overall duration has been extended to 3 hours and 10 minutes. Registration for the XAT exam date started on August 10, 2021, and finished on November 30, 2020.
XAT Exam preparations
You must approach and organize your XAT preparation in a time-constrained manner. Your preparation should begin with a thorough examination of your strong and weak areas, as well as the time you have available to improve on each of them. If you start studying more than 6 months before the XAT exam date, you have plenty of time to plan. However, if you're starting your preparation less than four months before the XAT exam date, you'll need to be extremely focused and efficient. To develop an exam preparation strategy, you must first understand the XAT test structure and curriculum.
- Make sure you arrive at your exam center at least one hour before the reporting deadline. This is critical since you will be able to approach the exam with a clean brain.
- Make sure you don't bring any electronic devices to the exam center, such as a phone, watch, calculator, or another calculator.
- You must also refrain from bringing any stationery or food inside the exam center.
Required documents

Key takeaways
Because the level of questions in each subject is generally believed to be tougher than CAT, XAT is considered the toughest MBA Entrance Exam. As a result, preparing for the same is rather challenging. The XAT Exam Pattern must be thoroughly reviewed to effectively prepare for the exam.
The type of exam may be determined based on the pattern. It can choose whether the test will be timed or timed and adjusted.
